Pitches made for painting

Derelict House, Mount Usher
Derelict House, Mount Usher
There is such adventure and intrigue about this painting. There is mystery, wonder and unanswered questions.
I love exploring derelict houses but this one I can’t get into. It somehow doesn’t matter because the adventure can be found in simply exploring it from here. Sitting looking at it now I don’t have to battle to get permission to visit it or to face the elements or deal with the fear that arises in such places.
There is a strong atmosphere created through the use of colour, the detail is soft and many things undefined and that brings me back to it again and again. Is the gate open or closed? Is the fence on the left overgrown or has it collapsed? What sort of tree is it to the right? Are they autumn leaves or is it a brilliant coloured Acer in full summer leaf? Are the flowers left over from a beautiful cottage garden lovingly planted by one of the famous Mount Usher gardeners? What are those brilliant blue flowers under the tree? Or the white ones? Could they be umbellifors with their strange smell?

Is there a veranda or have the windows lost their glass? I can’t quite make it out. How did the roof collapse, or has it just lost some slates? My eye is taken round the garden and to the house exploring detail but leaving me with many unanswered questions. ? Who lived there and why was it abandoned?
Could I get to see it I wonder, or do I need to? I no longer live near Mount Usher so it is not practical to visit like it used to be so to have this painting on my wall would bring such joy and pleasure, interest and intrigue and would also keep nice memories alive.
Yes… I will go for this one!
